Friday’s final game at the Puerto Vallarta Challenge was a true nailbiter, which gave the fans six and a half scoreless innings before James Madison brought home the winning run on a wild pitch.
The Dukes (2-1) enjoyed their second one-run victory of the tournament, and their only loss was an extra-inning affair earlier Friday. LA Tech fell to 0-3.
In the top of the seventh, the Techsters had two runners reach base, as Katie Smith got on via an error and Kassie Harris walked with one out. But JMU pitcher Payton Buresch hung tough after loading the bases with a walk and retired the side, fielding a grounder for the third out.
In the bottom of the seventh, JMU put runners on first and third with no outs, and after a pitching change, the ball got loose and Sara Jubas scored from third to end the drama. Buresch allowed four hits, striking out seven batters and walking four.
