In their second extra-inning battle at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, James Madison and Long Beach State each had seventh-inning heroics go by the wayside – the Dukes ended up on top after punching through three RBI singles in the top of the 10th inning.
James Madison moves to 3-1 at the event; the 49ers wrapped up their run in Mexico with a 4-1 record.
The Dukes got RBI hits from Morgan Tolle, Jessica Mrozek and Kate Gordon in the top of the 10th. Odicci Alexander entered the game as a relief pitcher with two outs in the bottom of the seventh right after Long Beach State tied it at 3-all; she pitched great in the clutch, going 3.1 innings and allowing one hit to go with three strikeouts.
James Madison had taken a 3-1 lead in the top of the seventh after a two-run homer from Ashley Samuels. The 49ers tied it on a two-run single from Nichole Fry and nearly secured the win in the bottom of the eighth inning, but JMU got a flyout/throwout at home double play to end the frame.
Cielo Meza pitched seven innings for Long Beach State, striking out six and walking four.
