Long Beach State sophomore pitcher Cielo Meza throws all seven innings and records 12 strikeouts as the 49ers open the 2018 season with a 2-1 win over Louisiana Tech.
LA Tech jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning off a bunt by senior Ali Galaz knocking in Jazlyn Crowder.
A Taylor Rowland single scored Kasey Hutton to put Long Beach State on the board in the top of the fourth and tie the game 1-1. On the next at bat, Grayce Majam would knock in the go-ahead run for the 49ers to jump in front of the Lady Techsters 2-1.
Two runs is all Long Beach State needed as Meza only allowed two hits and two walks in seven innings of work. The 12 strikeouts was three shy of her career-high 15 against San Jose State in 2016.
LA Tech falls to 0-2 for the tournament and will face Nevada on Friday at 6:00 p.m. ET. Nevada defeated the Lady Techsters 9-3 in the first game of the tournament. Long Beach State improves to 1-0 and will play a doubleheader tomorrow against Nevada at Noon ET and James Madison at 2:00 p.m. ET.
