Cielo Meza pitched her second straight stellar game for Long Beach State at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, allowing just one earned run and holding down No. 25 James Madison long enough for the 49ers to break through in extra innings.
Meza struck out nine batters and allowed just two hits for Long Beach State (3-0). Meza was the Big West Conference freshman pitcher of the year in 2017 and also played for the Mexican national team last year.
Long Beach State took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, when Naomi Hernandez doubled and was sacrificed to by Jessica Flores. Tierra Falo then launched a run-scoring single. In the bottom of the fourth, the Dukes (1-1) tied it with a solo home run from Odicci Alexander.
Alexander was the James Madison starting pitcher; she also threw a strong game and neither team could push a run across in regulation. In the eighth, with the international tiebreaker in use, Hernandez drove in a run with a line drive that bounced off Alexander; Flores then tripled, and Falo singled to make it 4-1.
Meza saw one run come across in the bottom of the eighth, but she notched a strikeout and saw the game end on a fielder’s choice grounder to shortstop.
