Long Beach State holds off a late seventh-inning rally by the Wolfpack to secure a 7-6 win at the PV College Challenge. The 49ers improve to 4-0 on the season.
In the second inning, a double by Aaliyah Gibson and a walk by Alyssa Mendez would put runners on for the Wolfpack. Lauren Gutierrez would single to load the bases and another walk, this time Sadaria McAlister, would score the first run of the game.
Nevada freshman pitcher Julia Jensen would hold Long Beach scoreless through the first two innings before Naomi Hernandez would score Andrea Guzman on a fielder's choice ground out. The 49ers would tack on another run in the 4th to take their first lead of the game on a Jamie Wren RBI single scoring Grayce Majam.
A three-run bomb by 49er junior Tierra Falo over the leftfield fence would push the Long Beach lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth.
A Jessica Flores RBI triple in the sixth would score two runs and increase the 49er lead to 7-1.
The Wolfpack would rally in the seventh with six hits and five runs, including a Gibson three-run home run, but would fall just short of tying the game.
Nevada concludes the PV College Challenge with a 2-3 record. The Wolfpack are back in action on Feb. 16 when they head to Las Vegas for the Desert Classic.
