SOUTH CAROLINA 4, BYU 3
In the first game of Session 1 at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, No. 9 South Carolina got a two-out, two-run single from Kenzi Maguire in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull ahead for the win.
Dixie Raley came in relief for the Gamecocks (1-0) to pitch three innings, allowing an unearned run. The victory was No. 1,500 for the South Carolina program.
The Cougars (0-1) opened the scoring in the second inning, with Emilee Erickson singling and reaching second base. Pinch runner Martha Epenesa was brought in on a two-out double by Rylee Jensen. BYU senior Allie Hancock hit a home run in the fourth, just the fifth of her career, to give her team a 2-0 lead.
Katie Prebble answered for South Carolina with an arcing two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. Prebble, a sophomore, transferred from Gardner-Webb after last season.
In the top of the sixth, an error in centerfield allowed the Cougars to score pinch-runner Taylei Williams, putting BYU up, 3-2.
