SOUTH CAROLINA 7, NOTRE DAME 4
Trailing by a run heading to the top of the seventh, No. 9 South Carolina unleashed a four-run rally to move past Notre Dame at the start of Saturday's action at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge.
The Gamecocks (3-1) got a single from Jana Johns to start the top of the seventh, and Cayla Drotar followed with a hit to put runners on first and second. Kennedy Clark bunted the runners to second and third on a sacrifice; Haley Simpson then tied the game with an RBI single. Jordan Fabian reached on an infield single to load the bases, and after a strikeout Madison Owens drew a bases-loaded walk to send South Carolina ahead, 5-4. Kenzi Maguire then lashed a two-run double to make it 7-4.
Cayla Drotar came in to pitch the bottom of the seventh for the Gamecocks and retired the Fighting Irish in order with two groundouts and a strikeout. Maguire had two hits and three RBI for South Carolina
Notre Dame (1-2) jumped ahead with three runs in the first inning; Katie Marino's single drove in Abby Sweet, and senior Caitlyn Brooks hit her 29th career homer to make it 3-0. South Carolina fought back with a solo home run by Maguire in the third inning, and then another long bomb from Mackenzie Boesel, which also brought home Maguire.
