Kristina Burkhardt punched a one-out three-run homer over the fence in right field in the bottom of the fifth inning, which rallied North Carolina past BYU.
The Tar Heels (1-2) started the fifth with three straight hits, and a run came across on a groundout by Kiani Ramsey to cut BYU's lead to 4-2.
BYU (1-3) scored single runs in each of the first three innings. Rylee Jensen singled, took second on a sacrifice, stole third and scored on a grounder by Lexi Tarrow; Jensen laced a two-out single to score Marissa Chavez, and Emilee Erickson drilled a solo home run, her fifth career long ball.
North Carolina scored a run in the first inning as Leah Murray reached on an error and Ramsey came through with a triple.
Brittany Pickett struck out two batters to end a BYU threat in the sixth inning, and she retired three straight in the seventh after allowing a leadoff single.
