NOTRE DAME 3, WASHINGTON 2 (8)
No. 3 Washington and Notre Dame battled in the second overtime game of the 2019 Puerto Vallarta College Challenge Saturday evening. Trailing nearly the entire contest, the Fighting Irish outlasted the Huskies, 3-2, in eight innings.
Washington (1-1) looked to pick up right where it left off from Friday night. Sami Reynolds’ triple scored Sis Bates and a batter later, a wild pitch allowed Reynolds to scamper home, giving the Huskies an 2-0 early advantage.
Sophomore pitcher Gabbie Plain seemed to have control of the Fighting Irish for the majority of the contest. Through five innings, Plain had just given up just one hit and struck out five.
Momentum swung back to Notre Dame (2-1) in the sixth inning. With Shelby Grimm standing at third, Ally West came through in the clutch with the Irish’s second hit of the game, pulling Notre Dame within one, 2-1. Two batters later, Melissa Rochford’s fielder’s choice drove home Katie Marino, tying the game at two.
The game remained deadlocked through the regulation seven innings. With the international tiebreaker in play, Ally Wester crossed the plate on a M.K. Bonamy single, giving Notre Dame its first lead of the game.
In the bottom of the eighth, Notre Dame tallied the final three outs, giving the Irish a big early-season win over the Huskies.
