BYU 4, BAYLOR 3
Kerisa Viramontes came in with one out in the seventh inning and pitched over, under and through trouble to douse Baylor’s final threat as BYU won its first game of the 2019 Puerto Vallarta College Challenge.
No. 18 Baylor got a double with one out by Nicky Dawson in the seventh; an infield hit and a walk eventually loaded the bases with one out. Viramontes got Hannah Thompson to pop out to first base, and then freshman Kassidy Krupit popped out to second to end the game.
Both teams scored a run in the first inning, with Baylor using a sacrifice fly from Goose McGlaun. BYU responded with a sacrifice fly by Olivia Sanchez.
Emilee Erickson doubled and scored on a single by Arissa Paulson to put BYU up, 2-1, in the second. With two outs, Rylee Jensen smoked a two-run double to the gap in right-center, pushing the Cougars up, 4-1.
In the top of the fifth, Baylor put two runners on to start the frame and eventually scored twice on a single from Thompson – that made the score 4-3 in BYU’s favor. The Cougars missed a chance to rebuild their lead, loading the bases with one out but then seeing Paulson popping out to third and Morgan Bevell doing the same to first base.
Paulson threw 6 1/3 ininngs for BYU (1-1); Dawson had three hits for the Bears (1-1).
