BYU scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to move ahead of No. 13 Washington, and Cougars starting pitcher McKenna Bull finished the deal in Friday’s final game of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge.
BYU (2-1) got a well-hit double by Caitlyn Alldredge with two outs in the sixth that drove home Emilee Erickson and Alexa Strid, and then added an insurance run on a single from Brielle Breland. Bull took the lead into the seventh and registered one out before Trysten Melhart singled and stole second. But the Huskies (1-1) got no further as both Taylor Van Zee and Ali Aguilar flied out.
The Cougars opened the scoring in the first as Ashley Thompson scored after a throw to second base rolled into the outfield. Washington tied it up in the fourth on an RBI single from Julia DePonte.
The Huskies took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth on a home run from Casey Stangal, whose drive to centerfield hit the BYU feather banner posted behind the fence.
