Baylor slipped past North Carolina in the 10th inning, with Nicky Dawson putting a ball in play with the bases loaded to score the deciding run.
In the bottom of the 10th, Maddison Kettler started on second base via the international tiebreaker, and Hannah Smith reached first when she was hit by a pitch by UNC’s Hannah George. Freshman Josie Bower struck out; Taylor Ellis was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Dawson singled, with Kettler reaching home plate a whisper before the throw.
In the top of the 10th, UNC’s Abby Settlemyre started on second base via the international tiebreaker; after a strikeout and lineout to second, Baylor pitcher Sidney Holman finished the frame with another strikeout, keeping the score tied at 9-all.
In the ninth inning, Kiersten Licea was on second base for North Carolina; she went to third on a sacrifice bunt. Destiny DeBerry singled and advanced to second while Licea stayed at third, and the bases were loaded after a walk to Leah Murray. Kiani Ramsey singled off the pitcher’s foot; a run scored and UNC lead, 7-6. Kristina Burkhardt walked, making it 8-6, and George hit a fielder’s choice dribbler that brought in another run for a 9-6 lead. With two outs, Lexi Godwin ended the frame with a flyout to centerfield.
In the bottom of the ninth, Baylor’s Ellis started on second base. A single put runners on first and second as Ellis couldn’t advance; Lou Gilbert singled to make it 9-7. In the top of the eighth, UNC started with George on second base, and she scored immediately on a single from Berlynne Delamora. Baylor then pulled off a double play on a soft liner toward second base, with the third out coming on a foul ball by first base.
In the Baylor half of the eighth, Madison Kettler took her spot at second base; a grounder to second did not advance the runner. Tyler Trott bunted, and on the errant throw Kettler scored (tying it 6-all) while Trott was out at second base. The inning ended with a grounder to second.
The Tar Heels jumped ahead in the first inning, as Murray scored on a single from Kristina Burkhardt and then Brittany Pickett drilled a double that brought in Burkhardt. Baylor responded with four runs in the bottom of the second – freshman Trott had the big hit with a two-run double, while Hannah Smith and Nicky Dawson also drove in runs.
Murray came across in the third on a triple from Burkhardt, who later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game, 4-all. Pickett then launched a home run to right field that barely cleared the mitt of the Baylor outfielder, and it was 5-4 for North Carolina.
Ellis reached first base in the sixth, but the threat was ended on a strikeout/throwout executed by UNC’s defense. In the seventh, Watson doubled with one out, but was stranded on two straight grounders to second base.
