WASHINGTON 9, NORTH CAROLINA 1 (5)
No. 3 Washington fell behind early but eventually showed why it's earned high regard this season, scoring nine consecutive runs to ease past North Carolina in the last of Friday's action at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge.
Huskies pitcher Taran Alvelo came in to relieve starter Gabbie Plain and muzzled UNC (0-2), allowing just one hit in 3 2/3 innings, to go with three strikeouts.
Zoe Goodman hit an RBI single for North Carolina in the first inning, but missed out on adding to their margin after loading the bases with one out in the second. Washington (1-0) scored three times in the third, capped by a two-run hit off the bat of Noelle Hee.
Morganne Flores, who missed all of 2018 with an injury, drove in two more runs with a double in the fourth, and with the bases loaded, Taryn Atlee was hit by a pitch to bring in another run, making it 6-1. Nawai Kaupe lifted a short sacrifice fly to left field for another run before North Carolina finally capped the four-run frame.
In the fifth, Amirah Milloy scored on an infield error, and Sis Bates finished it off with an RBI single.
