FIU Outlasts Boise State to Open Up Thursday in Puerto Vallarta

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico - FIU scores a pair in the top of the 7th to take down Boise State in a battle of a couple of the nation’s top mid-majors.

Boise State struck first with a 2 out RBI single from Megan Lake, scoring the leadoff, Sophia Knight. Lake and Knight were the Broncos two bright spots offensively, going 2-for-4 and 2-for-2, respectively.

The Panthers tied it up in the top of the 3rd with a Isabella Perez double to left, scoring the pinch runner, Ciera Diaz.

The Broncos regained their lead shortly after. In the bottom of the 3rd Mykenzie Hanna scored off a Hollie Farmer single into right.

Four straight singles from FIU in the 5th lead to the Panthers tying the game once again. Kally Meredith’s infield single, scored the pinch runner, Lindsey Burroughs. The Broncos limited damage to a single run in the 5th by a fielder’s choice (4-2 groundout) and a lineup double play.

The Panthers took their first lead of the game in the 7th from a 2 out infield single from Kendall Catherwood. The pitcher, Kennedy Byrd drove in the insurance run, after a Catherwood swipe of second.

Byrd set down the Bronco’s side in order to finish her complete game. Byrd allowed 2 earned runs, striking out 2. She moves to 4-0 on the year with 3 complete games.

Boise State plays again in Puerto Vallarta at 2:00PM EST against North Dakota State. FIU can be seen next tomorrow in a double header, starting at 11:00AM EST in PV.
