PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – Kaysen Korth threw a gem while Hailey Morrow scored the lone run of the game to lead BYU to a 1-0 victory over Illinois State in a pitching duel.
Korth pitched 5.1 innings, allowing just two hits and one walk with three strikeouts. The game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when Morrow laced a single to left field and then advanced to third base on a fielding error. Two batters later, Bre Townsend singled through the left side of the infield to drive in the game-winning run.
After Korth’s near perfect 5.1 innings, Jada Villegas came on in relief for the Cougars and pitched a perfect 1.2 innings to shut the door on Illinois State.
Paige McLeod pitched all seven innings for the Red Birds, allowing just the one run on six hits with three strikeouts.
